Anthony Joshua’s Rise, Fall and Resurrection
Nearly one year after Anthony Joshua lost the unified heavyweight championship to Oleksandr Usyk in August 2022, they met again for a rematch in August. Joshua continued his defiant spirit but succumbed once more as his Ukrainian opponent displayed intelligence, speed and incredible resilience to earn another uncontested victory, although this time it was recognized as a split decision which shocked many observers. As this defeat marked Joshua’s third defeat out of five fights since November, his professional career took a dramatic downward spiral which had him plummeting lower than ever before.
Anthony Joshua’s life took an unexpected and miraculous turn within two years, mirroring the tale of a legendary Phoenix. Much like its legend, Joshua saw his career go through an astonishing resurrection: from April of 2017 up until this past weekend he emerged victorious in four consecutive fights, an astounding accomplishment considering elite heavyweights often only compete once or twice annually.
AJ Has a History of Winning Boxing’s Grandest Events
- Joshua began his comeback last April by winning a strategic unanimous decision against Jermaine Franklin;
- In August that same year, Joshua was scheduled for a rematch against Dillian Whyte;
- instead he found himself locked horns with Robert Helenius who had been chosen as Whyte’s replacement;
- Joshua ended up knocking Helenius out in the 7th round;
- On Boxing Day of Reckoning last December AJ overpowered Otto Wallin enough that Wallin’s corner called it off after five rounds;
- on December 4th Joshua made quick work of Francis Ngannou again, flooring him three times before finishing him off with a knockout punch in round 2.
WBC and lineal world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is in training to fight Oleksandr Usyk, the unified IBF/WBA/WBO world heavyweight champion. This fight could last at least two installments, should Fury win one or both bouts against Usyk, Joshua would have created the perfect environment for challenging Fury and possibly producing boxing’s greatest event in history.
